The Telangana government has decided to continue its free saree distribution scheme for women, introducing a fresh design and colour for the upcoming phase. This time, the sarees will be distributed in a parrot green shade with red zari borders, replacing the blue sarees given last year.
As part of the scheme, the government has placed a large order worth around ₹450 crore for the production of nearly one crore sarees. The work has been assigned to the Telangana State Handloom Weavers Cooperative Society (TESCO), which will involve thousands of local weavers across the state.
Officials said the design was selected after reviewing multiple samples, with Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy personally choosing the final look. The aim is to bring variety each year instead of repeating the same colour and pattern.
The government plans to complete production by October and distribute the sarees on November 19, marking the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Last year, the scheme benefited over 86 lakh women, and a similar large-scale distribution is expected this year as well.
Apart from supporting women, the scheme also provides a major boost to the handloom sector by generating employment for weavers in districts like Sirisilla, Warangal, and Karimnagar.
Overall, the continuation of the scheme reflects the government’s focus on welfare while also supporting traditional industries, combining social support with economic activity.
