The Election Commission of India has launched the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) 2026 in Karnataka. From June 30, 2026, Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will visit every home across the state for door-to-door voter verification. This is the most important voter list exercise in Karnataka since 2002.

If you are a Karnataka resident, this article tells you everything you need to know — what SIR is, what documents you need, and how it will affect your daily life.

What is SIR 2026?

SIR stands for Special Intensive Revision. It is a large-scale voter list verification exercise conducted by the Election Commission of India (ECI). The last such exercise was done in 2002–2003. Now, after more than 20 years, it is happening again.

Karnataka has over 5.55 crore registered voters. The state has deployed 59,050 Booth Level Officers (BLOs) who will visit every household to verify voter details.

Why is SIR Being Done?

The Election Commission conducts SIR to:

  • Remove names of deceased voters from the list
  • Remove duplicate entries
  • Remove names of voters who have permanently shifted to another location
  • Add new eligible voters who have turned 18
  • Correct errors in existing voter records — wrong names, wrong addresses, spelling mistakes
  • Remove names of non-citizens who may have entered the voter list illegally

How Will BLO Visit Happen?

Between June 30 and July 29, a BLO (Booth Level Officer) assigned to your polling booth will visit your home. Here is what will happen:

  1. BLO will knock on your door and introduce themselves
  2. They will give you two copies of the Enumeration Form
  3. They will help you fill in your details
  4. You fill both copies and hand them back
  5. BLO gives you a receipt — keep this safely!
  6. BLO may ask you to show your documents for verification

What Documents Do You Need? — Complete List

Keep these documents ready when the BLO comes to your door:

🪪 Identity Proof — Any ONE of these

  • Aadhaar card (most important)
  • Voter ID card (EPIC)
  • Passport
  • PAN card
  • Driving Licence
  • Government employee identity card
  • Bank or Post Office passbook with photo
  • Caste certificate (OBC/SC/ST)
  • Ration card with photo

🏠 Address Proof — Any ONE of these

  • Aadhaar card
  • Ration card
  • Electricity bill / Water bill / Gas bill
  • Bank passbook
  • Rent agreement
  • Passport

🎂 Age Proof — Any ONE of these

  • Birth certificate
  • 10th class / SSLC certificate
  • Aadhaar card with Date of Birth
  • PAN card
  • Driving Licence
  • Passport

📋 Most Important — 2002 Voter List

If your name or your parents’ names appear in the 2002 Karnataka voter list, it is the strongest proof of your long-term Indian residency. You can check the old voter list at voters.eci.gov.in.

Can Your Name Be Deleted Even If You Have Voter ID?

Yes — this is the most important warning.

Even if you have a valid Voter ID card, your name can be removed from the voter list if:

  • You do not cooperate with the BLO visit
  • Your name spelling is different across documents (e.g., Aadhaar says “Suresh” but voter ID says “Suresha”)
  • Your address does not match in different documents
  • Your family details cannot be verified — SIR links every voter to their father, mother, or spouse

Urban residents, tenants living in rented homes, and women who changed surnames after marriage are at the highest risk of being flagged.

Does Voter List Deletion Mean Loss of Citizenship?

Absolutely NOT.

This is the biggest fear among Karnataka residents — and it is based on a misunderstanding.

The Election Commission of India clearly stated before the Supreme Court: “The SIR process and citizenship are completely separate. If a person fails to register on the voter list, their citizenship will not be revoked.”

The Supreme Court of India upheld this on May 27, 2026 and confirmed that the Election Commission cannot cancel anyone’s citizenship. Only a court of law can question citizenship.

Simple Truth:

  • SIR can remove your name from the voter list
  • SIR cannot cancel your Indian citizenship
  • Your Aadhaar, Passport, Ration Card, PAN Card — nothing else is affected

How SIR Affects Common People — Real Life Situations

Situation 1 — Tenant Living in Rented House

If you are living in a rented house and your voter ID still shows your old address, the BLO may flag your entry. Solution: Carry your rent agreement and current address proof to show the BLO.

Situation 2 — Woman Who Changed Surname After Marriage

Many women have different names on their Aadhaar (maiden name) and voter ID (married name). This mismatch can cause problems. Solution: Carry both your old and new documents — marriage certificate, old Aadhaar, new Aadhaar.

Situation 3 — Person With Spelling Error in Documents

If your name is spelled differently across documents — for example, “Mohammed” in one and “Mohammad” in another — your record may be flagged. Solution: Get your documents corrected before June 30 at your nearest Aadhaar centre or voter office.

Situation 4 — Person Born at Home Without Birth Certificate

Many older residents, especially from rural areas and low-income backgrounds, were born at home and never got a birth certificate registered. Solution: You can use your SSLC certificate, old ration card, or parents’ documents as age proof.

Situation 5 — Elderly Person With No Documents

If an elderly person has no documents at all, the family members can help by showing their own Aadhaar cards and explaining the family relationship to the BLO. The BLO is trained to handle such situations.

What Should You Do Right Now — Step by Step Action Plan

This Week (Before June 30):

  • ✅ Find and collect your Aadhaar card and Voter ID
  • ✅ Check your name in the voter list at voters.eci.gov.in
  • ✅ Check if your name or parents’ names are in the 2002 Karnataka voter list
  • ✅ Check for spelling errors across all your documents
  • ✅ Collect school certificates and birth certificates of all family members
  • ✅ Make photocopies of all important documents

When BLO Comes (June 30 to July 29):

  • Be at home during verification hours
  • ✅ Cooperate fully with the BLO
  • ✅ Fill the Enumeration Form carefully — check every spelling
  • ✅ Show your documents
  • ✅ Collect and safely keep the receipt given by BLO

After BLO Visit:

  • ✅ Check the draft electoral rolls when published on August 5
  • ✅ If your name is missing — file a claim before September 4

You Can Also Do It Online

If you cannot wait for the BLO visit, you can submit your Enumeration Form online:

  1. Go to 👉 voters.eci.gov.in
  2. Click “Fill Enumeration Form”
  3. Enter your Mobile Number or EPIC Number
  4. Enter the OTP sent to your phone
  5. Fill your details carefully and submit

What If Your Name Gets Deleted? Do Not Panic!

If your name is removed from the voter list during SIR, you can get it back:

  • Before August 5: Contact your BLO directly
  • August 5 to September 4: File a claim at voters.eci.gov.in or at your local Electoral Registration Office (ERO)
  • After October 7: Apply using Form 6 at voters.eci.gov.in

Deletion from the voter list is not permanent. You can always be re-added with proper documents.

Who is Most at Risk in Karnataka?

The following groups of people are at the highest risk of having their names flagged or deleted during SIR:

  • Women who changed surnames after marriage
  • Tenants living in rented homes in cities like Bengaluru, Mysuru, Mangaluru
  • People with name spelling errors across different documents
  • Rural residents who were born at home without registered birth certificates
  • Poor citizens who lack multiple documents
  • People with old addresses on their voter ID who have moved homes

If you fall in any of these categories — act now, before June 30.

Common Mistakes to Avoid During SIR

Do not ignore the BLO visit — this is the biggest mistake
Do not submit blurred photocopies — all copies must be clear
Do not rely only on one document — carry multiple proofs
Do not forget to collect the receipt from BLO
Do not leave spelling errors uncorrected — even small differences matter
Do not send documents without self-attestation — write “self-attested”, sign, and date
