In a significant move aimed at strengthening national security and cybersecurity infrastructure, the Government of India will restrict several Chinese manufacturers of surveillance equipment from selling internet-connected CCTV cameras in the country starting April 1, 2026.
The decision follows the implementation of new regulatory norms mandating strict compliance with certification and security standards for all internet-enabled surveillance devices. Under these rules, companies must obtain necessary approvals and meet prescribed safety benchmarks to continue operations in the Indian market.
Officials have indicated that manufacturers failing to meet these requirements will be barred from selling their products. The restrictions are expected to primarily impact Chinese firms that dominate the low-cost surveillance equipment segment but lack compliance with India’s updated regulatory framework.
The government’s move is driven by growing concerns over data security, unauthorised access, and potential vulnerabilities associated with foreign-manufactured surveillance systems. Internet-connected CCTV cameras, which store and transmit sensitive data, have been identified as potential risks if not adequately regulated.
Industry experts believe that the new rules will compel businesses and consumers to shift towards certified and trusted surveillance solutions. Organisations will be required to verify compliance before procuring CCTV systems, ensuring adherence to national standards.
The development is also expected to boost domestic manufacturing under the ‘Make in India’ initiative, creating opportunities for Indian companies and globally compliant brands to expand their presence in the surveillance equipment market.
