In a significant crackdown on child labour, authorities in Mandya district, Karnataka have rescued 40 child labourers and registered 14 First Information Reports (FIRs) against employers who violated child labour laws during the 2025–26 financial year.

Deputy Commissioner Kumar, addressing a district-level task force meeting at the DC office, warned that strict legal action would be taken against any establishment — including garages, hotels, and factories — found employing children below the age of 14.

District authorities conducted a total of 951 inspections between April 2025 and March 2026 under the Child and Adolescent Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act, 1986. As a result, 40 child labourers were identified and rescued. While 14 FIRs have been filed, 26 additional cases are currently being heard before the Judicial Magistrate of First Class (JMFC) court.

The Deputy Commissioner stressed the importance of ensuring compulsory education for all rescued children, directing officials to actively monitor school attendance and engage with parents of frequently absent students to prevent them from being pushed into labour.

Senior Civil Judge and District Legal Services Authority Member Secretary Anand M. emphasised the need for task force meetings to be held every three months at both district and taluk levels to strengthen enforcement.

During 2025–26, awareness efforts included nine street plays, distribution of 7,000 posters, 22 wall writings, and outreach in six gram panchayats — all aimed at educating communities about child labour and child marriage laws. Rescued children are to receive counselling, education support, and skill training for rehabilitation.
