India’s agriculture sector remains highly vulnerable to unpredictable weather conditions, pest attacks, and natural disasters. In this context, the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) has emerged as a crucial support system for farmers across the country. Launched in 2016 by the Government of India, the scheme aims to provide affordable crop insurance and protect farmers from financial losses due to crop failure.
Under PMFBY, farmers can insure their crops by paying a minimal premium—just 2% for Kharif crops, 1.5% for Rabi crops, and 5% for commercial and horticultural crops. The remaining premium is subsidized by the government, ensuring that farmers are not burdened with high costs. This makes the scheme accessible even to small and marginal farmers.
One of the key strengths of PMFBY is its comprehensive coverage. It protects farmers against a wide range of risks, including droughts, floods, cyclones, pest attacks, and crop diseases. The scheme also extends to post-harvest losses caused by unseasonal rains, which often damage crops even after they are harvested. Additionally, localized risks such as hailstorms and landslides are also covered.
The scheme uses modern technology such as satellite imagery, drones, and remote sensing to assess crop damage more accurately and speed up claim settlements. Compensation is directly transferred to farmers’ bank accounts through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system, reducing delays and ensuring transparency.
Despite its benefits, PMFBY has faced challenges in implementation. In some regions, farmers have reported delays in claim settlements and a lack of awareness about the scheme. Differences in execution across states have also impacted its effectiveness. However, continuous improvements and increased digital integration are helping to address these concerns.
Overall, the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana remains a vital initiative in strengthening India’s agricultural resilience. By offering financial protection and encouraging modern farming practices, the scheme plays a key role in supporting farmers and ensuring food security for the nation.
