Tamil Nadu’s CM Vijay launches the ‘Thaimaaman Thanga Mothiram Thittam’ scheme, gifting gold rings to newborns at government hospitals across the state.
What Is the Tamil Nadu Gold Ring for Newborns Scheme?
The Tamil Nadu government has announced a landmark welfare initiative that will gift a 1-gram gold ring to every baby born in a government hospital across the state. Named ‘Thaimaaman Thanga Mothiram Thittam’ (loosely translated as “Maternal Uncle’s Gold Ring Scheme”), the programme is rooted in a beloved Tamil cultural tradition where the maternal uncle presents a gold ring to welcome a newborn into the family.
Through this scheme, the government assumes the role of the maaman (uncle) for every child born in its institutions, presenting a gold ring as an enduring token of welcome.

- Annual Budget: ₹755.83 crore
- Effective From: June 22, 2026 (retrospective effect)
- Official Launch Date: September 15, 2026 (birth anniversary of former CM C.N. Annadurai)

Why This Scheme Matters
The scheme is designed to honour and support new mothers while promoting deliveries in government medical institutions. It also seeks to strengthen the emotional and cultural bond by gifting a gold ring, traditionally associated with prosperity and well-being in Tamil culture.
Gold carries profound cultural and emotional resonance in Tamil Nadu. Gifting gold to a newborn celebrates the baby’s arrival, honours the mother’s journey, and transforms public health delivery into a source of immense community pride. This token also remains an enduring asset, generating lasting institutional goodwill.
Scale and Implementation
Approximately 7.8 lakh deliveries are recorded in Tamil Nadu annually, with institutional deliveries constituting 99.9% of all births as per the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-6).
The gold rings will be procured through the Tamil Nadu Medical Services Corporation (TNMSC), which will supply them based on the yearly indent given by the Director of Public Health and Preventive Medicine.
To ensure transparent distribution, a multi-layered verification process will be conducted under active CCTV monitoring, with real-time deduplication enforced via a dual Facial Recognition System (FRS) and iris scan. Eligibility will be authenticated through delivery records and the mother’s unique RCH ID linked to Aadhaar/PICME at the time of discharge.
A dedicated State Project/Programme Management Unit will oversee implementation, monitoring, and management of the scheme statewide.
Part of a Larger Vision
The scheme has been approved as part of the government’s Vetri Thamizhagam Vision Document, under which the Tamil Nadu government has been implementing several maternal and child welfare programmes, including financial assistance for pregnant women, free delivery services, newborn care, nutrition support, emergency obstetric treatment, and the PICME monitoring system.
It is also one of the key pre-poll promises made by the ruling TVK party, now fulfilled as one of its first major welfare announcements specifically targeting newborns in public health facilities.
Bottom Line
The Tamil Nadu gold ring scheme is a culturally resonant, large-scale public health initiative that blends tradition with welfare delivery. With nearly 7.8 lakh babies set to benefit every year and a budget of close to ₹756 crore, it is poised to be one of India’s most distinctive mother-and-child welfare programmes.
