Kolkata: Mamata Banerjee on Monday refused to step down as Chief Minister after her party’s defeat in the West Bengal Assembly elections, openly rejecting the verdict.
“Why should I resign?” she asked while speaking to reporters, alleging irregularities in the election process and questioning the credibility of the results.
The setback comes after the Bharatiya Janata Party secured a clear majority in the state, dealing a major blow to the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC). Banerjee also lost from her own constituency, adding to the political shock.
Despite the numbers, she insisted that the mandate was “not genuine” and signalled that her party may challenge the outcome through legal channels.
Under constitutional norms, a Chief Minister must prove majority support in the Assembly. With the BJP expected to stake claim to form the government, attention is now on the Governor’s next move.
