Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay made a strong start to his government by approving 436 development schemes across multiple departments during the very first meeting of the TVK Cabinet held at the State Secretariat in Chennai on June 5, 2026.
The landmark Cabinet meeting, attended by all ministers including alliance partners from the Congress, VCK and IUML, focused on building a clear roadmap for inclusive and accelerated growth across the state.
Key Decisions from the First TVK Cabinet Meeting
Among the major topics discussed were the convening of the first session of the new Tamil Nadu Assembly, the Governor’s address, and key policy announcements to be incorporated into it. The Cabinet also deliberated on the presentation of the first full-fledged state budget, including revenue patterns, fund allocations and fulfilment of promises made in the TVK election manifesto.
Another significant agenda item was the proposed closure of 717 state-owned TASMAC liquor outlets, as earlier announced by Chief Minister Vijay, along with attracting new investment proposals to boost industrial development across Tamil Nadu.
436 Schemes to Drive Tamil Nadu’s Growth
Briefing the media after the meeting, Energy and Law Minister R. Nirmal Kumar stated that all 436 approved schemes come with clearly defined objectives and measurable implementation targets for each department. Ministers will now work closely with their departmental secretaries to prepare detailed project reports (DPRs) and ensure timely execution of each scheme.
All schemes will be monitored through the Department of Special Programme Implementation, with periodic reviews to track progress and ensure accountability.
Focus Areas of the 436 Schemes
The approved schemes span a wide range of priority sectors including youth development, women’s welfare, farmers’ welfare, fishermen’s welfare and the creation of a drug-free Tamil Nadu. The government has also intensified anti-drug enforcement measures statewide, in line with Chief Minister Vijay’s stated mission to eradicate the drug menace, which has been identified as a key driver of rising crime against women and children.
A Decisive Beginning for the TVK Government
With 436 schemes approved on day one, Chief Minister Vijay has signalled that his government is focused on delivery, welfare and development from the very start. Political observers say this sets a strong tone for what Tamil Nadu can expect from the new administration in the months ahead.
