Solar ingot and wafer manufacturing facility planned in Tumakuru, KarnatakaRSOLEC, an Indo-US joint venture, plans a ₹5,000 crore, 5 GW solar ingot and wafer facility in Tumakuru.

Bengaluru, October 1, 2026: Karnataka has landed a major solar manufacturing investment. Renaissance Solar and Electronic Materials (RSOLEC), an Indo-US joint venture, plans to invest ₹5,000 crore in a 5 GW solar ingot and wafer manufacturing facility in Tumakuru. Karnataka Industries Minister M.B. Patil announced the development today.

What is planned in Tumakuru?

The proposed facility will manufacture solar ingots and wafers, with a planned capacity of 5 GW. The investment is valued at ₹5,000 crore.

Why solar ingots and wafers matter

Ingots and wafers are among the earliest and most important stages in the solar supply chain. Silicon is first formed into ingots, which are then sliced into thin wafers. These wafers are used to make solar cells, which are assembled into solar modules (panels).

India has built up solar module assembly capacity in recent years, but upstream manufacturing such as ingots and wafers has been far less developed. A plant at this stage of the chain is therefore significant for the country’s push toward domestic solar manufacturing.

What it means for Karnataka

  • Industrial growth: A ₹5,000 crore project adds to Karnataka’s profile as a destination for manufacturing investment.
  • Regional development: Tumakuru, which lies north-west of Bengaluru, stands to gain from a large-scale industrial facility.
  • Clean energy supply chain: The project places Karnataka in the part of the solar value chain that India is working to strengthen.

Indo-US partnership

RSOLEC is an Indo-US joint venture, which also signals continued cross-border interest in India’s clean energy manufacturing sector.

What we don’t know yet
