India’s space agency has added another international accolade to its growing list of honours. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has been presented with the 2026 Goddard Astronautics Award by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) for its landmark Chandrayaan-3 mission.

India’s Ambassador to the United States, Vinay Mohan Kwatra, accepted the award at the AIAA’s ASCEND conference. The AIAA cited ISRO for the historic touchdown of Chandrayaan-3 near the lunar south pole, which it described as a mission aimed at deepening humanity’s understanding of the Moon and beyond.

The Goddard Astronautics Award is the highest honour AIAA confers in the field of astronautics. It was established by Mrs. Goddard in the 1940s to honour her husband, Robert H. Goddard — the rocket pioneer and engineer whose early liquid-fuelled rocket launches laid the groundwork for modern astronautics.

Taking to social media after the ceremony, Ambassador Kwatra congratulated ISRO and the Chandrayaan-3 team, and said he was honoured to accept the award on their behalf. He also used the occasion to highlight Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Space Vision 2047, India’s upcoming deep space exploration and human spaceflight programmes, and the country’s growing commercial space sector.

The recognition caps a remarkable run of global appreciation for the mission. In 2024, ISRO Chairman S. Somanath received the IAF World Space Award at the 75th International Astronautical Congress in Milan for the same mission. The Chandrayaan-3 team was also presented with the 2024 John L. ‘Jack’ Swigert Jr. Award for Space Exploration at the annual Space Symposium in Colorado, with the Space Foundation calling India’s lunar achievement a model for all space-faring nations.

On August 23, 2023, India became the first country to successfully land a spacecraft near the Moon’s south pole — a feat that has since earned the nation widespread recognition as a leader in affordable, high-precision space exploration.
